How to Fly the Flag

The flag is one of the most important and visible symbols of America, and it is important that we treat it with dignity and respect.

Flying the Flag Outdoors

When the flag is flown from a staff protruding from a building, window, or balcony, the union should be at the top of the staff.When it is displayed over a street, the flag should be hung vertically, with the union to the north or east. If it is displayed over a sidewalk, the union should be farthest from the building. When the flag is flown on the same flagpole with another flag, the United States flag should always be at the top. Examples of other flags are scout, society, state, or community flags. 

Flying the Flag Indoor

When on display indoor, the flag is given its own place of honor and is always positioned to its own right. The United States flag should be placed to the right of the staging area or speaker, and other flags should be placed to the left. When two flags are used together and the staffs are crossed, the United States flag is placed on its own right; and its staff should be in front of the other flag.

Traditional guidelines say that the flag should be displayed only from sunrise to sunset. However, if the flag is illuminated at dark, it can be displayed at all times.
